The Controversy Of The Salem Witch Trials Essay - 1548 Words

There is much one can learn about this tragic smear in our history as the United States of America. The Salem Witch Trials have been sensationalized as of late, becoming a popular show, and an event that many movies have been made of. Without doing the proper research, one would think that the trials were more violent than it became. There were no witches burning at the stake, or daily hangings, or drownings, but people of the time were frightened nonetheless. The acts of just a few key people drove a whole town to hysteria, and fear. Throughout the trials over a hundred people were accused of witchcraft, and nineteen people were executed solely based on the claims of others that they were using the Devil’s Magic, many without any evidence The fingers of two little girls, driven by the urging of one powerful man created a butterfly effect that caused a wake of destruction within the walls of Salem. It can be shown through research that the Reverend Samuel Parris was the drivin g force behind the hysteria that the townspeople of Salem were subjected to. The Salem Witch Trials began in the year 1692 and concluded in 1693, in the colony of Salem, Massachusetts. The start of the trials began in the aftermath of King William’s War when refugees were funneled down into Salem creating a strain on the people and the economy in the town. This helped to spread the belief that all of the problems they were facing was the work of the devil. Thou Shalt Be Loyal Double Standard and Expectations in the Odyssey free essay sample

She gives many examples of the goddesses who have been misled by the gods due to their affairs with mortal men. Calypso begins her rant, â€Å"You unrivaled lords of jealousy-scandalized when goddesses sleep with mortals†(5. 131-132). She speaks of â€Å"chaste Artemis†(5. 135) and â€Å"Demeter the graceful one†(5. 137). Both goddesses had lost their mortals to the will of the gods. Like the goddesses before her, Calypso must now say goodbye to her mortal. Though Calypso only references the double standards between the gods and goddesses. There are actually many moral ambiguities that plague male and female characters in the Odyssey for both mortals and gods. Characters like Penelope, Helen, and Clytemnestra are all mortal women that have been held up to this standard. And it is the male heroes and gods like Odysseus who have become praised for the low standards they have set for themselves. Throughout the Odyssey we see signs and blatant references to the fact that Odysseus has ben unfaithful to Penelope. The first one being on the island with the â€Å"lustrous Calypso† (5. 129. It may be true that Odysseus was held captive on the island, but that does not mean he wasn’t once willing. Odysseus is presented as if he has lost his agency; â€Å"In the nights, true, he’d sleep with her in the arching cave- he had no choice† (5. 170-171). However, Odysseus has been on the island with Calypso for some time and he even alludes to having been pleased at one point when it is revealed that he has been crying over his unfortunate expedition (5. 169). The epic indicates that Odysseus was once happy, â€Å"He wept for his foiled journey home, since the nymph no longer pleased†(5. 170). Furthermore Odysseus compares Calypso with his own wife Penelope. He shows us just how much he admires Calypso when he tells why he must proceed home. Odysseus says, â€Å"Look at my wise, Penelope. She falls far short of you, your beauty, stature†(5. 239-240). Odysseus once thought that the nymph would satisfy him. Yet he has now come to learn that Penelope is whom he must be with. This recognition is portrayed as honorable and heroic, but also an after thought. Though Odysseus eventually figures out that he does not want Calypso, the fact that his will, could even be tested is duly noted. Penelope on the other hand has remained faithful throughout Odysseus’ absence. She could have gone off and married one of the many suitors, but she remained unwed. She has simply led her suitors on, and has neither given herself physically or emotionally to someone else. This â€Å"matchless queen of cunning† (IV. 95), as an enraged suitor calls her, has been undeniably loyal. Odysseus has been gone for twenty years, and she hasn’t even known if he is alive or dead. This loyalty shown by Penelope is something that is expected from a woman no matter the circumstances. Although the expectations for women are set high like Penelope has proven, other mortal women have not been as faithful. In Book IV we come across Helen, the wife of Menelaus. When she sees Odysseus she is reminded of the war in Troy in which she indicates she may have been unfaithful. Helen tells of the brave men that fought in the war, and calls herself â€Å"a shameless whore†(IV. 163). Helen gives us reason to believe that she was morally indecent while the men were away. Although Helen may have been unfaithful, no man who was gone during the war would have been deemed morally indecent had he engaged in an affair. Another important character is that of Clytemnestra. She is given as an example of a woman who did not follow the rules. In fact her story is the worse case scenario. She gave in to the temptation of the suitor Aegisthus while her husband Agamemnon is away. Upon his return, she allows for Aegisthus to kill him. In the end her and Aegisthus are both killed and everyone ends up dead. â€Å"Prince Orestes home from Athens, yes he cut him down, that cunning, murderous Aegisthus, who’d killed his famous father†(III. 348). Then Prince Orestes buries his own mother for her treasons; â€Å"He held a feast for the Argives, to bury his hated mother, craven Aegisthus too† (III. 349-350). From this example we can conclude that nothing good can come from a woman being unfaithful to her husband. Yet this example is but another double standard that doesn’t hold true for men. Where is an example of a man being unfaithful to his wife and it ending poorly? Throughout the epic we have seen both mortal and immortal women being upheld to the standards of a true and moral spouse while their husbands are simply championed for coming back home. However there is another double standard that Homer alludes to, it is between the goddesses and mortal women. Unlike mortal women, goddesses are given more freedom to participate in affairs. With Circe and Calypso we see them take Odysseus under their wing, and they are not reprimanded for doing so. Calypso might be angry the gods have taken Odysseus away, but if she had been mortal, she would have been shunned or maybe even killed for having such an affair. Or be deemed â€Å"a shameless whore†. The same can be said for Circe. So we might ask why Odysseus and even the goddesses have not been held up to the same standards of Penelope. Well there is a simple answer. Power lies within fertility. It can be argued that, though Odysseus was unfaithful, Penelope could not do the same because she could bare children. Or it could even be argued that Helen was indeed a â€Å"shameless whore,† because she could have caused a war with the birth of a child that was not her husbands. All these arguments are valid, but often, validity is not all there is. Though men are not fertile, they posses the ability to remain faithful, just as a women do. Snow White Once upon a time a Queen had artificial insemination from a massive weightlifter and gave birth to a beautiful little girl named Snow White. The Queen and King of the kingdom loved and cared for Snow White and she was a happy baby. She was a beautiful little princess and everyone loved her; especially her father. He would always come by himself and say goodnight for up to 15 minutes at a time when she was around 2 years old. When Snow White reached the tender age of 3 her mother, the Queen, received a headboard concussion and died a few days later. Snow White was crushed and so was the King. The King mourned for a month, though, before remarrying an extremely buxom brunette. Unlike her real mother, Snow White disliked her cruel step- mother. The new Queen would verbally abuse Snow White and slap her around if she didn't pick up after herself or if she made loud noises. The King, ever the protector of his Queen, would refuse to step in and defend his daughter. By age 12 Snow White had really grown into a nearly full fledged woman. Even at this age finding proper "support" became difficult with a size double "D". Even she was surprised by the growth; however, no one was more surprised than Snow White's stepmother. The Queen, even in her younger days, had always had the largest mammary glands in the kingdom. With the sudden growth of Snow White the Queen began to doubt herself. So she went to her magic mirror to ask if she was still the most buxom woman in the land. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the bustiest of them all?" The mirror, as expected replied, " You are, of course, my most sovereign Queen." Satisfied, the Queen let the matter settle for a while. As Snow White turns 14 things begin to grow even more and the Queen once again gets very worried. Snow White had now begun to steal some glances that would normally go to the Queen and the Queen became insanely jealous. So she went back to the mirror. "Mirror, mirror on the wall who has the largest mammary glands of them all?" Quite unexpectedly the mirror answered, "Here's the answer to your test, Snow White now has the largest breasts." The Queen could not believe what she had just heard and decided something must definitely be done. The Queen rushed to her plastic surgeon and demanded that he double the size of her already large mammary glands. The surgery goes well but the doctor warns her not to go near open flame or something "bad" might happen. The Queen's mobility is now extremely decreased and she has trouble moving around. For over 2 weeks she is almost completely bed-ridden. Finally, she puts herself on a strenuous workout schedule and gets back her former mobility. However, in the process she loses a cup size or two. Feeling very good about herself (and her cup size) she goes to the mirror once again. "Mirror, mirror on the wall who has the most massive mammary glands of them all?" The mirror responds, " No nips, tucks, enlargements, or rest will keep Snow White from having the biggest chest." The Queen is now more distraught than ever, and knowing of no other option, decides to find someone to terminate Snow White. She finds a woodcutter who needed money very badly. He still refused to murder Snow White even though he desperately needed the money. The Queen then slammed the door shut and her and the woodcutter had a five minute convincing session (I don't know what she said to him.). He finally agrees to murder Snow White. One sunny afternoon the woodcutter and Snow White go out into the forest to pick some berries. The woodcutter, having never seen Snow White up close before, tells her that the Queen has hired him to kill her. He tells Snow White to run away from here because the Queen will kill her when she finds out she is still alive. Snow White takes his advice and runs deep into the woods. The woodcutter then jumps off a cliff and dies because he knows what the Queen would do to him if he went back. Snow White began to get weary as she wandered through the forest. Finally, she found a small cottage with seven vertically challenged men in the fields. Snow White begs them to let her stay with them. They weren't really interested

Ecological Systems Theory, Urie Brofenbrenner The ecological systems theory of human development is proposed by Urie Brofenbrenner, a Russian American psychologist. In this theory, he stated that everything in a child and also the surrounding environment can affect the child development (Oswalt, 2008). He also developed this theory to comprehend the relationship between the child, the family, teachers, and the society (Growth and Development Theory, 2013). This ecological systems theory is divided into few different levels which are micro system, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and chronosystem. The first level is micro system which is the small immediate environment that is directly connected to the child (Sincero, 2012). As an example, a child has the closest relationship with his parents and family which also can influence the childs development mentally or physically. The relationship between the child and the teachers, friends or also neighbours is also considered to be in the micro system. Next, mesosystem includes the interaction between two microsystems such as the relation between the childs home and the school (Growth and Development Theory, 2013). Exosystem is the level which includes other people and also places that may have no direct interaction with the child but still affects the childs development like his parents workplace, the neighbourhood or even the extended family members (Oswalt, 2008). Macrosystem is a larger level consists of the cultural contexts like ethnicity or other influences such as economic influences and cultural influences (Sincero, 2012). Every environmental event and transitions occur in an individuals life is included in the chronosystem (Sincero, 2012). The events such as marriage, divorce or others that can affect someones life are the examples of this system. 1.2 How does Urie Brofenbrenners ecological systems theory affect the child development? As I have already explained before about this ecological systems theory by Brofenbrenner in the previous page, this theory can actually affect the child development. According to Doll-Yogerst (2011), this model of the ecological systems recognizes that a childs development is affected by the settings and also affects the surrounding in which he spends his time every day. The relationship of the child and the microsystem can also give impact in both directions which is being called as bi-directional influences (Doll-Yogerst, 2011). For example, a childs parents may affect his behaviour or belief but he can also affect his parents behaviour or belief. Particularly, his family is the most essential setting because he spends his time mainly with the family and it has the most influence on him especially the emotion (Doll-Yogerst, 2011). This situation shows that a childs development is influenced the most by his family, if one of his parents is working as a doctor and he understands it a s doctors are good people since they help others, it may gives him the idea to be just like his parent in the future. There are also other important settings that may influence the childs development such as his extended family, teachers, peers, child care centre, school, and preschool or kindergarten (Doll-Yogerst, 2011). These settings are directly interacting with the child because he will encounter his teachers when he is at the school, or playing with his peers in the neighbourhood. The childs development is based on how he experiences while spending time in all these settings (Doll-Yogerst, 2011). It is can be seen in the situation where the child may have stumbled upon a bad experience while playing at the playground that will probably make him to avoid playing at the playground anymore or even good experiences he has that will affect his development. Other than that, a child involves in many microsystems (Bronfenbrenners Microsystems, n.d.). Each of the microsystem interacts with each other which also can be called as mesosystem. The number of quality interactions between settings also has important implications for a childs development (Doll-Yogerst, 2011). For instance, the parents and the teachers at school are both considered as microsystem from the childs point of view. These two microsystems will interact with each other in such situation like parents-teachers conference that usually being held in school. The child probably acts differently in school than at home since he is surrounded by his peers. If the child is having any difficulties or problems at school, the teacher will tell the problems to his parents so that they will acknowledge how their child is doing at school. This interaction between both parties is important that will reflect on the childs development. The other external environments that may have indirect connection with the child but still give huge impacts on him are included in the exosystem level (Doll-Yogerst, 2011). This exosystem level is when the settings that may be unknown to the child for example the parents workplace or colleagues will affect his growth. It can be exemplified in the situation when the parents coming back home with the stress that they get at their workplaces that will influence the childs thoughts (Doll-Yogerst, 2011). Besides that, the government, the economical factors, the mass media can also affect the childs development. For instance, the child is influenced by the animation series on television that leads him to follow what the characters are doing. The largest system in this theory is the macrosystem which consists of the most remote of people and things to a child nevertheless still has a great influence for the child (Oswalt, 2008). This includes cultural values, customs and laws (Ecological S ystems Theory, n.d.). As an example, the child has been raised by following the national laws that drugs are illegal or murder is a crime that will make him obey and acknowledge which is wrong and which is right. The events that happen during the transitions over a lifetime are called chronosytem, which means everything happens in a childs life while he is growing up that may changes his perception. 1.3 How does Urie Brofenbrenners ecological systems theory apply children in preschool and early primary levels. The ecological systems theory is somehow applied to the children in preschool and early primary levels. Horowitz-Degan claims that the childs behaviour can be analyzed by using the environmental influences, as well as the cognitive factors (as cited in Bronfenbrenners Ecological, n.d.). This situation can be seen in preschool or primary school, where the class acts as the microsystem that will give influences to the child. As an example, if a teacher walks into a classroom brightly, it will automatically sets up the mood of the classroom to be warm and friendly which will positively affect the childs cognitive sphere of influence then next encourage the process of learning (Van-Petegem, Creemers, Rossel, and Aelterman, 2005). For instance, a teacher teaches the students excitedly and happily in the classroom, the students will have more interest to listen to the teacher because they have been influenced by the positive vibes from their teacher. In addition, Van-Petegem defines that t he teachers behaviour can also affect the students and can be a model for the consideration of the feelings of others and the value of interactions (as cited in Bronfenbrenners Ecological, n.d.). This shows that this ecological systems theory gives effect on the childs social development in mircosystem which also can be increased through the encouragement given by the teacher. Furthermore, in the preschool centres or primary schools, there will be a playtime provided that will develop the motor skills development in the children (Brofenbrenners Ecological, n.d.). Activities such as creating craft, indoor arts like drawing, colouring or painting can also help in the growth of the students motor skills. While in the classroom, the students will be given the opportunity to speak up their opinions that may give influence to the other students who are listening to the opinions and it will help them in the intellectual development. This is because the students will start thinking about the opinions and try to relate to the knowledge that they already have. If there is an argument happen in the class, the students will try to convey their thoughts to the teacher that will also give a huge impact to them intellectually since they use their minds to counter the argument. Besides, the issues associated with the adults who are involved in the effect of the childs mic rosystem despite of the child have no direct connection to the exosystem (Brofenbrenners Ecological, n.d.). If the parents are having problems at the workplace, it will influence the child at home. Parents may be spend more time on solving their work issues that probably make the child feels that he is being ignored which affects his emotional development. The development of children will also be affected in the macrosystem even though it is the largest layer of ecological systems theory (Brofenbrenners Ecological, n.d.). In this level, the child is influenced by the cultural values that give impact on the social development. 1.4 Summary of Urie Brofenbrenners ecological systems theory. To sum up, the ecological systems theory by Urie Brofenbrenner does apply to child development including the children in preschool and early primary levels. In the beginning of this story, Dave talks about how a gun would change the way people acted towards him. He feels that if he owns this power, the men in the fields who work with him will have more respect for him, and his mother will start treating him as an adult. Dave feels as if he is surrounded by people who treat him as a child and he does not like this at all. “You ain’t nothing but a boy. You don’t need a gun.'; This statement said by Joe, is the main reason why Dave truly wants a gun, to feel independent. Even though Dave wants to be acknowledged as an adult, his actions are very immature and childlike. The act of cornering his mother for a gun is one good example of immaturity. Dave feels as though he can not ask his dad for the gun for fear of rejection, a perfect example of immaturity. Daves defiance to his mother’s rules is another example of immaturity. Dave’s mother agrees to allow Dave to buy the gun as long as he promises to bring it straight to her. He agrees to this, yet he does not go along with her wish. The next morning, Dave set out to the fields early to shoot his gun. He ends up accidentally killing Mr. Hawkins mule, Jenny. The way Dave goes about dealing with this problem is childish. He panics and decides to lie about what really did happen. He makes up a story which he knows nobody will believe, yet he feels that if everyone does in fact believe him he can avoid his problems more easily.

This is the most common ICT in the health sector. This ICT application should be used in every community especially in rural areas as much as it can to improve the health conditions that exist there. According to the historian Suetonius’s Life of the Divine Claudius, the account of that emperor’s reign in his compendium The 12 Caesars, written around 112 A.D., it stems from a peculiar event. Claudius had commanded an immense public works project, the draining of Lake Fucino for agricultural land. It took 30,000 men and 11 years to complete. In honor of the feat, the emperor ordered up a naumachia - a mock sea-battle involving thousands of men and ships - to be held on the lake before it was emptied. The men, thousands of criminals otherwise to be hanged, hailed Claudius thusly: â€Å"Ave, Imperator: Morituri te salutant!† upon which the emperor replied â€Å"Aut non† - â€Å"Or not.† After this, the historians disagree. Suetonius says that the men, believing themselves pardoned by Claudius, refused to fight. The emperor ultimately cajoled and threatened them into sailing against one another. Cassius Dio, who wrote about the event in the 3rd century B.C., said the men merely pretended to fight until Claudius lost patience and commanded them to die. Tacitus mentions the event, some 50 years after it happened, but doesn’t mention the plea by the gladiators (or more precisely, naumachiarii). He relates, though, that a large number of prisoners were spared, having fought with the valor of free men. Catering is another place math is used to translate regular recipes into great volume, simple addition and multiplication aid in this field. If you have a simple recipe that serves 4-6 people you need to be able to multiply that by 10 or even 15 to feed many more people. The question is no longer should sex education be taught, but rather how should it be taught. Over 93% of all public high schools currently offer courses on sexuality or HIV. More than 510 junior and senior high schools have school-linked health clinics, and more than 300 schools make condoms available on campus. The question now is, are these programs effective, and if not, how can we make them better? Kids need the right information to help protect them-selves. The US has more than double the teenager's pregnancy rate of any western industrialized country. Teenagers have the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) of any age group, with one in four young people contracting an STD by the age of 21. STD's, including HIV, can damage teenagers' health and reproductive ability. And there is still no cure for AIDS. HIV infection is increasing most rapidly among young people. One in four new infections in the US occurs in people younger than 22. In 1994, 417 new AIDS cases were diagnosed among 13-19 year olds, and 2,684 new cases among 20-24 year olds. Since infection may occurs up to 10 years before and AIDS diagnosis, most of those people were infected with HIV either as adolescents or pre-adolescents. Knowledge alone is not enough to change behaviors. Programs that rely mainly on conveying information about sex or moral precepts-how the body's sexual system functions, what teens should and shouldn't do-have failed. However, programs that focuses on helping teenagers to change their behavior-using role-playing, games, and exercises that strengthen social skills-have shown signs of success. In the US, controversy over what message should be given to children has disadvantaged sex education programs in s... ...nd practice in communication, negotiation, and refusal skills. Although sex education programs in schools have been around for many years, most programs have not been nearly as effective as hoped. Schools across the country need to take a rigorous look at their programs, and begin to implement more innovative programs that have been proven effective. Educators, parents, and policy-makers should avoid emotional misconceptions about sex education; based on the rates of unwanted pregnancies and STDs including HIV among teenagers, we can no longer ignore the need for both education on how to postpone sexual involvement, and how to protect one self when sexually active. A comprehensive risk prevention strategy uses multiple elements to protect as many of those at risk of pregnancy and STD/HIV infection as possible. Fred and Rose West

Fredrick Walter Stephen West and his wife, Rosemary (Rose) Letts, are well known throughout Europe and most parts of the world as two of the most gruesome and sadistic serial killers of the century. Though it is not clear how many people they had murdered, as well as their motive to do so, the evidence presented from the twelve discovered murders are sure to send a chill up your spine. Fred West was born September 29, 1941. He was the second of six children to be born into a family of poor farmers. West claimed that his father had incestuous relationships with his daughters, one of the many peculiar norms in this household along with bestiality. At the age of 20, he was arrested for molesting a thirteen-year-old girl and although he evaded serving time for his crime, his family quickly disowned him after. In September 1962, twenty-one year old West rekindled his love with an old girlfriend named Catherine Costello, who at that time was better known as Rena from her time working as a prostitute. Even though Rena was already pregnant with another man’s baby, she and West married on November 17. During this time, West began working as an ice cream truck driver, and on November 4, 1965, he killed a four-year-old boy by hitting him with his van. Fearful of his safety, he and his wife Rena moved with their two kids and nanny, Isa McNeil. Eventually, Rena and Isa fled to Scotland to escape West and his sadistic sexual cravings. She left her children behind. During this period, West began to see another woman who soon after became pregnant. Around her eighth month of pregnancy, his second girlfriend disappeared and her remains were not found until June 1994; she disappeared in August of 1967. While still married to Rena, the then twenty seven year old West met his next wife Rosemary Letts on November 29, 1968, the day of her fifteenth birthday. Soon after she turned sixteen, she and west moved in together. On October 17, 1970, she gave birth to their first daughter Heather Anne. Soon after, Fred West was imprisoned for theft; it is believed that during this time Rosemary killed Charmaine, Fred’s stepdaughter from his first marriage. On January 29, 1972, Fred and Rose West married and on June 1 of that year, Rose gave birth to their second daughter Mae. During this time West encouraged his wife to work as a prostitute. Rose eventually had seven kids, three of which were of mixed race. For obvious reasons, the family moved into a more spacious house on 25 Cromwell Street. West turned the top floor into bedrooms and the first into â€Å"Rose’s room†, which was used for prostitution. This room had peepholes in it so West would be able to watch his wife performing with other men and on the outside of the door, there was a red light. This would let the children know that Rose was busy and that nobody should bother her. Like West, Rose came from a similar background where incest was allowed. In fact, Bill Letts, Rose’s father, would often visit their home to have sex with Rose, of course with the consent of her husband. In October 1972, they hired seventeen-year-old Caroline Roberts as the children’s nanny. On December 6, 1972, the West has invited her to their home, where they both raped her. Fred let her go only after she promised to be their nanny. In early 1973, the West’s took eight-year-old Anne Marie, Fred’s daughter from his first marriage, down to the cellar where they bound and gagged her before West raped her, and Rose watched. In 1979, Anne Marie became pregnant with her father’s baby, but the pregnancy was terminated. Unable to deal with her father’s abuse, she left home. Shortly after West, began abusing Heather who disappeared a few years later. West felt that his daughter needed to be â€Å"broken† into the life of prostitution and whom better he felt to do this job then himself. In May 1992, West filmed himself raping one of his daughter multiple times. From there the investigation escalated although the rape case fell because of the two core witnesses backing out. The remaining children were placed in foster care. During this time, various social workers interviewed the children. The disappearance of their daughter Heather became known during this process, but to her siblings her death was known merely as a joke her parents used to explain her disappearance. In reality, she suffered a brutal death by the hand of her own father, who not only strangled her, but also dismembered her body and buried her in the back yard. The following the arrest of Fredrick West police uncovered human bones in his backyard not only those of his daughter. He immediately confessed to what he had done though it took time for him to stick to his story he could no longer hide from the pain he had inflicted on others. During the tour West gave the cops of the cellar and all the other rooms where he committed these heinous crimes, he said that the spirits of the dead were calling to him and telling him they were better off not being found, he regretted his confession. Out of the twelve murdered souls only nine bodies were found in the house, including one in the bathroom, five in the cellar, and three in the garden; one of those was the body of their daughter Heather. West states that the murder of his daughter was simply â€Å"enjoyment turned to disaster†. He kept the secret of killing his daughter for eight years, not even Rose knew of this dark secret. Between 1967-1987 Fredrick West and his wife tortured, raped, and killed at least twelve young women and girls, mostly in their own home. Fred West was found guilty for 11 murders and Rose of 10, following the trial another body was found which increased Fred’s total count to 12. On January 1, 1995, Fred West was found dead in his cell; he committed suicide by hanging himself, he was cremated and only three people attended his funeral. Rosemary Letts, unlike her husband, never confessed. She was tried and found guilty of all 10 murders and was sentenced to life without parole.
